This reflection, written by Mark, Director of CROP Ministries, was first shared in the Kootenai Journal. We are republishing it here with context for our CROP families. Many cultures ,  from quinceañeras to bar/bat mitzvahs to milestone birthdays, honor the passage from childhood to young adulthood.

These traditions are beautiful. CROP exists to build on them, helping parents and mentors turn a meaningful moment into a year of intentional growth.

Across cultures, families mark the transition into adulthood with powerful traditions. Latino families celebrate quinceañeras at fifteen. Jewish families hold bar or bat mitzvahs around twelve or thirteen. In other communities, milestone birthdays or confirmation ceremonies play this role.

These traditions matter. They root young people in family, community, and identity. But without ongoing guidance, the impact can fade once the ceremony ends.

That’s where the biblical idea of phronesis comes in — practical wisdom lived out daily. At CROP Ministries, we encourage parents to honor and keep their traditions, while also surrounding their teens with mentors, habits, and service that reinforce the values behind the celebration. In other words: quinceañera and discipleship. Ceremony and calling. Tradition and wisdom.
